A History Lesson With Booze: Joy in Mudville and the “Three Strikes”
On June 3rd, 1888, Ernest Thayer’s baseball rhyme “Casey At the Bat” was first published in the San Francisco Examiner. Popularized by vaudeville actor DeWolf Hopper, soon everyone in America was in love with the poem… except the author. But he would probably appreciate at least one of the three drinks Daniel Hyatt from the Alembic Bar in San Francisco created for us. (Recipes to come)
Inspired by “striking out,” Daniel created three drinks for the DPD, each one is based on America’s other favorite past time, bourbon. Specifically, Elijah Craig bourbon.
Strike 1
This is based on the classic “Blood and Sand” cocktail, blood and sand being two ingredients involved in a baseball game.
3/4 oz bourbon
3/4 oz maraschino liqeur
3/4 oz tawny port
3/4 oz orange juice
Mix, shake with ice and pour.
Strike 2
The pitcher is feeling cocky now and is going to “put a little pepper on it.” That’s baseball slang for making the pitch “hot,” i.e. fast.
Muddle a couple of black peppercorns
Add 3/4 oz of bourbon, a dash of lemon juice, a touch of maple syrup.
Mix, shake and pour
Strike 3
This is it. Our last shot at victory. Even atheists are praying, which is why we’re using chartreuse liquer — it’s made by Carthusian monks.
3/4 oz of bourbon
3/4 oz of chartreuse
a dash of lemon juice
and a shot of tabasco
You’ve been struck out! To avoid a bench clearing brawl, go home, take two aspirin and don’t call anyone in the morning.
Guest of Honor: Paul Verhoeven
Best known for directing mainstream movie classics like Robocop, Basic Instinct and Starship Troopers, Verhoeven just released a nonfiction book examining the life of Jesus. Rico manages to scare the hell into him.
