Episode 70: Huey Lewis, Le Situation, and The Birth of Football

This week: Pop ‘n’ soul star Huey Lewis gets dressed… Canada takes out our TV trash… We learn the greatest name in football… Plus Kai Ryssdal kids around and Sonny and the Sunsets supply a tune.

A History Lesson With Booze: Football’s #1 and “The Black and Gold”
This week in 1892, William “Pudge” Heffelfinger put the “pro” in pro football. Hear his story, then see if you can tackle a cocktail honoring one of the teams he spawned:

“The Black and Gold,” as mixed by Jesse Best, bartender at Olive or Twist in the cradle of pro football – Pittsburgh, PA.

In a shaker, pour:

  • 1 1/2 oz. Blavod black vodka
  • 1 oz. Chambord

Shake vigorously, strain into chilled martini shell to create black bottom layer. Separately, in shaker, combine:

  • 1/4 oz. Limoncello
  • 1/4 oz. sours

Shake and spoon over the Vodka/Chambord mixture to create upper “gold layer.” Garnish with twist of lemon. Sip and happily accept penalty for unsportsmanlike drinking.

Guest of Honor: Huey Lewis
Pop star Huey Lewis has sold over 30 million records… and scored an 800 on his math SAT’s. This rare specimen tells Rico about his raw soul roots, the hard-rock legend from whom he copped his clothes, and why no one asks about his induction into rock’s Hall Of Fame.

One For The Road: Sonny and the Sunsets – “Too Young to Burn”
San Francisco outfit Sonny and the Sunsets spins out fun, ramshackle songs that cut through the ethereal fuzz of the current indie scene. On “Too Young to Burn” (off Tomorrow is Alright) you can hear every twang, handclap, and vocal nuance. Best listened to fireside at a late-autumn hootenanny.
