History Lesson with Booze: Krakatoa and the “Blood & Ashes”
This week in 1883, the island of Krakatoa unleashed one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions in history — an explosion so loud it could be heard 2,000 miles away. After hearing about the chaos which followed, you’ll need a drink — click the link above for the recipe.

In short glass:

  • curl 1 sprig of rosemary in bottom of glass
  • coat glass and rosemary with absinthe, and set on fire

In shaker mix:

  • 2 oz Voyager gin
  • 1/4 oz Batavia Arrack
  • 1oz fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup

Shake and pour over burning rosemary
Fill glass with mountain of crushed ice
Pour 1/2 oz of shiraz “lava” over crushed ice

Drink and explode with joy, thereby creating a tsunami of reverie amongst you and your dinner companions.

After working for years in the salt mines of legendary punk rock record label SST, Gary Hustwit went on to produce rockmentaries like “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart,” about the band Wilco. A few years back he debuted as a director with “Helvetica,” about the ubiquitous font, and now he’s back with “Objectified,” his thought-provoking film about the design of objects. Rico talks with Gary about surfboards, potato peelers and, of course, the secret recipe for Honeybaked hams.
